Getting To Chiang Mai

In the past, getting to Chiang Mai required much preparation. The best mode of transportation from Bangkok was by elephant. Needless to say, it took several weeks, if not months, to walk the 800 kilometers (500 miles) to Chiang Mai. Fortunately, you have many more options for getting to Chiang Mai in the 21st century. It is now possible to fly to Chiang Mai from Bangkok in about one hour. If you travel by bus to Chiang Mai, the trip should last about nine hours. The Chiang Mai train ride from Bangkok lasts 12-14 hours. The way you choose for getting to Chiangmai with your family is not important. What matters is that you have a chance to relax and enjoy your holiday together.

Fly to Chiang Mai

Travel by Elephant?

Getting to Chiang Mai by air is extremely convenient. In the past, Thai Airlines was the only option for your air travel to Chiang Mai. Now there are several other airlines that have daily flights to this northern city. The majority of air traffic into Chiang Mai still comes from Bangkok, but there are a growing number of air carriers that by pass Bangkok and fly to Chiang Mai from outside Thailand.

Chiang Mai Train Travel

The railway to Chiang Mai was completed in the 1920's. Train travel to Chiang Mai has not changed much since that time. Of course, diesel locomotives are used instead of steam engines, but the Chiang Mai train still travels at a relaxed speed. Getting to Chiang Mai on the train is a good choice for most families. The ride is sometimes noisy, but there is room for the kids to move around a bit.

Take a Bus to Chiang Mai

Getting to Chiang Mai by bus is very economical. However, bus travel with your family may not be a very positive experience. I don't like to travel by bus with small children. There is not much room on a bus and sitting still for the nine ride to Chiang Mai can be a challenge for toddlers. If you choose to go by bus, there are several bus companies which provide excellent service to Chiang Mai.
