However, the many Chiang Mai walking streets are becoming popular with local people. The best known Chiang Mai walking street happens on Sunday evenings. If Sunday does not fit into your schedule, there are walking street markets on Friday and Saturday as well. Chiang Mai Sunday Walking Street MarketThe Sunday walking street market offers a shopping experience similar to the night bazaar. The biggest difference is the price of the items for sale. Since the market is only open one day a week, the street tends to get very crowded. The majority of the shoppers are local people, however, more and more tourists come each week to get in on the bargain hunting. The Chiang Mai walking street market was started by the prime minister and is now on the street that runs from Thapae gate into the old center of town. The street is closed to traffic from about 3:00pm till 11:00 on Sundays. Even if shopping isn’t for you, it’s a great place to go and enjoy a cheap meal and drink or just to people-watch. When you get tired, there are numerous places that offer foot massages. The combination of big comfortable chairs, warm air and a gentle massage is guaranteed to relax you. Most evenings, street theater can be seen as can displays of traditional singing or dancing. |
