Getting Around with Chiang Mai Transportation

Chiang Mai transportation is not quite as modern as other world class cities. Chiang Mai does not have a subway system or skytrain like Bangkok. There is no need to worry. It will be easy to get your family around Chiang Mai.

Chiang Mai Songthaews

The most common type of Chiang Mai transportation is the infamous red truck or "songthaew". Songthaew means two rows in Thai, which refers to the two bench seats in the back of the red pickup trucks that are all over Chiang Mai. Songthaews are very useful vehicles as they can be used to transport people and cargo. Chiang Mai songthaews are a very handy way for your family to get around town.

Chiang Mai now has a public transport system in place. Since February, 2006, the Chiang Mai buses have been providing an economical, efficient, user-friendly public transportation service for Chiang Mai residents and tourists. Bus fare is only 15 baht per person for the entire route. The Chiang Mai bus system is the cheapest form of transportation in the city.

Chiang Mai Metered Taxis

Chiang Mai metered taxis are becoming nearly as abundant as the red songthaews. Well not quite, but it is now a common everyday occurance to see metered taxis running around town. The starting fare is 40 baht. However, many of the drivers do not want to use the meter and will try to negotiate a set fare for your trip. The taxis in Chiang Mai do not cruise the streets looking for passengers like they do in Bangkok. Most of the taxis will wait at one of the local malls or the airport. Chiang Mai metered taxis are very comfortable and provide air conditioned comfort when the day time temperatures are soaring.

Chiang Mai Tuk Tuks

Chiang Mai tuk tuks are an exhilarating way to get around town. If you have never taken a ride on one, then make sure to hire a tuk tuk at east once for your Chiang Mai transportation while on your family holiday. The kids will love it and you will too. Make sure to negogiate your fare before embarking on your trip. Chiang Mai tuk tuks are rather slow, but due to the open air ride it will be an unforgetable journey.

Chiang Mai Rental Cars

There are several international rental agencies in Chiang Mai. Most have offices at or near the airport. Several local business offer rental cars a well. If you plan to stay in Chiang Mai for several days, it may be worthwhile to rent a car or van for the duration of your family holiday. There is much to see and do in Chiang Mai city, but renting a car will allow you to take your family to the many Chiang Mai attractions outside of town as well.
