The Chiang Mai Tiger Kingdom

About ten years ago, we visited a tiger zoo in Northeast Thailand. We had never been to a zoo that allowed the visitors to play with tiger cubs. Even at four months old, tiger cubs are big enough to do harm to a human adult. At that time, the zoo did not have enough visitors to make it a profitable business.

The Ubon zoo has now opened a branch north of Chiang Mai. It is called the Chiang Mai Tiger Kingdom. The property is still under construction, but they are opened for business.

The main attraction to the Chiang Mai Tiger Kingdom is the chance to spend time playing with a few tiger cubs. For about $US10, you can enter the tiger enclosure and spend 20 minutes playing with the tiger cubs. The cubs have been born in captivity and are very familiar with humans. However, they are still wild animals with their natural instincts. But where else can you have your picture taken with an actual tiger?

The Chiang Mai Tiger Kingdom is located north of the city on route 107. Turn left at Samoeng Road and follow the signs to the Tiger Kingdom. Entrance to the park is free. It is open from 10:00 a.m to 10:00 p.m.
