Chiang Mai Metered Taxis

Chiang Mai metered taxis are now a very common sight on the streets of Chiang Mai. But they are a rather recent addition to the Chiang Mai transportation options. They are simliar to the metered taxis in Bangkok. The majority of the taxis do not drive around looking for passengers like they do in Bangkok. But they can be contacted through a call center for pickup at your home or hotel in the Chiang Mai area. Many of the drivers prefer to wait at malls and shopping centers in hopes of finding persons to use their services.

Rates are very reasonable at 35 baht for the first 2 km and 4 baht/km after that, however it's very hard to persuade the driver to use the meter. Dial 053-279291 or 053-922142 for advance bookings, which are particularly useful when going to the airport (100 baht flat fare).

Even though the number of Chiang Mai metered taxis is growing rapidly, many Thai people choose the familiarity of the Chiang Mai songthaews. The taxis do cost more than other forms of public transportation, but the air-conditioned comfort can be well worth the added expense on a hot and humid Chiang Mai day.
